After weeks of wrangling, parents of around 40 students who were illegally trying to secure admission at Sir Parshurambhau College (SP) admitted that pursuing backdoor admissions to the institute with the help of student unions was an error. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/oct/students_4.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 314px;" /> Changing position: Around 40 students and their parents met deputy director Suman Shinde (in green) yesterday, seeking admission in any college of the city. Pic/Niranjan Medhekar Now that the unions have left them in the lurch, the parents and thier wards gathered at the office of the chairperson of Centralised Admission Procedure (CAP) yesterday, and submitted a written apology. The letter requests the education officials to allot them admissions in Std XI in any college of the city. &ldquo;Till a fortnight ago, all these students and parents were accusing me and my office of not giving them admission at SP College. After the so-called student activists have abandoned them, they have realised their mistake and are now requesting me to admit them in any college,&rdquo; said Suman Shinde, deputy director (Pune division) and chairperson, CAP. One of the parents, Jenny Mehta, who has been running pillar to post to secure her son&rsquo;s admission, said, &ldquo;We did not realise what we were doing. We were dependent on assurances given by the student unions and SP College principal.&rdquo; Asked why she had been pressing for SP College, Mehta replied, &ldquo;In the CAP, my son was allotted a seat in Sinhagad College, which is unaided and has hefty fees. That&rsquo;s why we were hoping to secure admission to SP College anyhow, as it would not add to our financial burden, since the fees here are comparatively low.&rdquo; Mehta, however, was quiet when asked how she could expect to secure admission to the institute, knowing fully well that the merit list of the college closed at 90 per cent for Science stream. Her son hasn&rsquo;t scored such a high percentage. Shinde said, &ldquo;As the first semester is already over, allotting seats to these students is not in my hand. After consulting with all the members of CAP, I will forward the letter to the state government. Whether these students will get admission in any college would be decided only after a reply from the government.&rdquo; u00a0
