With the ongoing protest over the Bihar SIR voter roll, the Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day on Thursday as well. The disruptions in the Upper House of Parliament continued on Thursday. During the post-lunch sitting, the protest by the Opposition MPs intensified as they demanded a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. After a few minutes of chaos in the House, it was finally adjourned for the day by the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

As reported by news agency PTI, the Upper House of Parliament was earlier adjourned till 2 p.m. soon after it assembled at 11 a.m., amid protests over the SIR exercise, which is underway in Bihar. When the House reassembled post-lunch, Opposition MPs were once again on their feet, raising slogans against the SIR.

While discussions on the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025, were being taken up, the Opposition MPs continued their protest, with many trooping into the Well of the House. As reported by news agency PTI, Trinamool Congress MP Mamata Thakur was also named by Chair Ghanshyam Tiwari for displaying a placard and trying to disturb the proceedings of Parliament.

Soon after the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha started, the Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, was briefly allowed by the Chair to speak. He further said that “the country was going through dangerous times,” and that the government and Opposition should work together. Kharge said the government should allow a debate on SIR, and the Opposition would "do everything in the interest of the country,” as cited by news agency PTI.

After all the ruckus in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, the Leader of the House, JP Nadda, urged the Chair to continue with the Bill as per the schedule. With the Opposition sticking to their protest over the SIR row, the discussions in the Rajya Sabha were abruptly cancelled for the entire day by the Chair.

However, after a brief debate amid sloganeering and din, the Coastal Shipping Bill was passed by voice vote, and the House was adjourned for the day soon after.
