The department has slapped five times the sum payable as fine on traders, who have either not registered themselves under LBT, or not paid the tax before importing goods.

Additional municipal commissioner Rajendra Jagtap said, “Over the past week, LBT officials raided 16 spots, and initiated action against errant merchants. The drive will continue till March.”

Till now PMC has acted against a small-scale industrialist, some beer shops and a few retail outlets in Ishanya Mall.

“Currently, we are targeting only those traders who have not paid LBT till date. If trader unions feel the action is unnecessary, they should point out a single instance of a merchant being harassed,” Jagtap stated. u00a0
