New Delhi: The Delhi High Court yesterday said the private sale of army apparel and gear was a "serious issue since these have been used by terrorists to strike at military bases and sought to know the government's stand on the matter.
"Yes, we know it is a serious issue. Otherwise we would not take it up," a bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath said when the NGO, which has raised the issue citing the terror strike at Pathankot air base early this year, submitted that the private sale of military apparel and gear was a cause for concern. "We want to know your response," the bench told the lawyer appearing for the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The Pathankot Air Force base was attacked in January this year by terrorists dressed in Indian Army fatigues, leading to the death of seven security personnel including a Lieutenant Colonel, and a civilian. Last month, terrorists dressed in police uniform had attacked the army's XVI Corps headquarters at Nagrota in Jammu district, killing seven security personnel including two officers.
Mehbooba slams Farooq Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti yesterday slammed National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah for his remarks that his party is not against separatist Hurriyat, saying it showed that the Opposition party was behind the violence in the Valley over past few months. She alleged that NC wants to keep the atmosphere charged in the Valley as it "can go to any extent for power".
"He (Abdullah) used to say that Hurriyat leaders should be thrown into river Jhelum. Today he is talking about something else. It again makes it clear that NC will play with the lives of anyone, including children and women, for power," Mehbooba told reporters.
"The statement of Farooq telling his party workers to lend full support to Hurriyat makes clear one thing which we did not mention till now that NC can go to any extent for power," she said.
