If you have been violating traffic norms with impunity so far in the city, beware: fresh sets of eyes are watching you. The Pune city traffic police department is planning to nab traffic violators with the help of high-end closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, which will be installed in all the four zones in Pune and PCMC soon.

The project is likely to be flagged off next month. Traffic cops, along with the city police, will be keeping an eye on the movement of vehicles in Pune. Vishwas Pandhare, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), said, &ldquo;The main objective is to create awareness amongst citizens about the importance of abiding by traffic norms. When people experience the fear of being watched, they will automatically refrain from violating traffic norms.&rdquo; Pandhare added, &ldquo;With the help of the ANPR, we will be able to trace the owner of the vehicle and will send the challan directly to their residence. This will send a strict message to the masses, reminding them to abide by traffic norms that will help bring down the increasing number of fatalities.&rdquo; The project is not only aimed at nabbing those who break traffic laws, but will also ensure greater safety and security to citizens. The cops hope that the CCTV cameras will help them bring down cases of chain snatching, robbery and vehicle theft. Additional commissioner of Police (administration), Abdur Rehman said, &ldquo;The project is aimed at nabbing those involved in criminal activities like robbery, chain snatching and vehicle theft. With the help of the CCTV cameras, we will be able to intimate the nearest police station so that the culprits are traced quickly.&rdquo; Rehman added, &ldquo;The project has been given to Allied Digital Service Limited, who are working on the installation of CCTV cameras and are likely to complete and hand over the project in August.&rdquo;
