Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to immediately begin priority safety measures at the accident-prone Navale Bridge stretch in Pune on the Mumbai–Bengaluru National Highway.

The information was shared by Pune Member of Parliament (MP) and Union Minister of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol.

The directive comes in the wake of a recent fatal accident at Navale Bridge that claimed eight lives. Following the incident, Mohol met Gadkari in New Delhi on Wednesday night and held an in-depth discussion on the accident and the required corrective measures.

Mohol said he briefed Gadkari on the steps already undertaken by the Central and State governments to reduce the number of “black spots” near the Navale Bridge area. However, in light of the recent tragedy, he stressed the need for more effective and urgent intervention.

He also submitted a detailed report based on the meetings held in Pune with the Municipal Corporation, PMRDA, District Administration, Police, and NHAI officials, outlining the immediate measures agreed upon. Mohol requested Gadkari to issue instructions at the central level without delay.

Key points discussed in meeting

  • A strong focus on permanent, long-term solutions to prevent accidents
  • Road redesign and structural improvements by NHAI
  • Checking vehicle load at the Khed–Shivapur toll plaza
  • Mechanical examination of vehicles by the RTO at the toll booth
  • Stricter speed control and increasing the number of rumblers
  • Upgrading barricading and signal systems
  • Redesigning dangerous curves and accident-prone spots
  • Strengthening coordination between all government agencies

Mohol said, "To put an end to the recurring accidents at Navale Bridge, I met Hon’ble Nitinji Gadkari and submitted the report of our meetings. Responding positively, he assured that the required actions will be taken immediately."
