<p>The Pune district administration declared a holiday for all schools on Monday after the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-weather-imd-issues-red-alert-for-mumbai-thane-raigad-extremely-heavy-rain-forecast-23638471" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">India Meteorological Department</a> (IMD) issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall.</p>
<p>Officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students amid the possibility of intense rainfall across the district.</p>
<p>The weather department&rsquo;s warning prompted authorities to advise residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-weather-update-imd-issues-heavy-rain-alert-for-state-ghat-areas-likely-to-receive-extremely-heavy-rainfall-23638338" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Pune Municipal Corporation</a> (PMC) also appealed to citizens to avoid stepping out unless necessary and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities.</p>

<h2>Citizens advised to avoid risky areas</h2>
<p>The civic body urged residents to stay away from rivers, streams and other vulnerable locations as heavy rainfall continued across the region.</p>
<p>Officials said people should regularly follow official weather updates and instructions issued by the administration.</p>
<p>Emergency response teams have been asked to remain alert as authorities continue to monitor <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/maharashtra-monsoon-imd-issues-red-alert-for-pune-schools-shut-on-monday-amid-heavy-rain-warning-23638358" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">rainfall activity</a> and its impact across Pune district.</p>
<p>The administration said precautionary measures are being taken to prevent any rain-related incidents and ensure public safety.</p>
<h2>Mumbai schools and colleges shut due to rainfall</h2>
<p>Meanwhile, the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-rains-sdma-advises-work-from-home-for-private-offices-half-day-for-govt-offices-23638440" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</a> (BMC) announced that all government, private and civic body-run schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed on July 6 following the weather alert issued by the IMD.</p>
<p>The civic body said the decision was taken considering the safety of students amid the forecast of heavy rainfall and strong winds.</p>
<p>"In view of this forecast and keeping the safety of students in mind, a holiday has been declared on Monday, July 6, 2026, for all government, private, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools and colleges in Mumbai."</p>
<p>The BMC clarified that government and private offices would continue to function as usual.</p>
<h2>Thane and Navi Mumbai announce school closures</h2>
<p>Apart from Mumbai and Pune, authorities in nearby districts also announced precautionary measures due to continuous rainfall.</p>
<p>Thane District Collector Shrikrishnath Panchal announced that childcare centres, primary schools and secondary schools would remain closed in the district.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-monsoon-65-trees-crash-across-navi-mumbai-as-gusty-winds-worsen-monsoon-impact-23638357" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation</a> (NMMC) also declared a holiday for all schools on Monday to ensure student safety amid persistent rainfall.</p>
<p>Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil and NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde appealed to citizens to avoid leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary.</p>
