Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday paid tribute to late singer Zubeen Garg at the site where his last rites were performed at Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati. Gandhi offered a ‘gamosa’, the traditional Assamese scarf, and a wreath at the platform where the singer was cremated. As Gandhi offered tribute to the singer, the crowd present at the site shouted slogans - ‘Justice for Zubeen’ and ‘Joy Zubeen’.

After paying tributes, the Congress leader visited the singer’s residence to convey his condolences to the bereaved family members and said Zubeen Garg’s family and the people of Assam have the right to know what happened to him in Singapore. “The sooner the truth comes out, the better in Zubeen Garg's case, as the family needs closure,” he said.

No foul play: Singapore

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) have said that they do not suspect any “foul play” in the case, adding that the investigation is still underway. The SPF in a statement said its investigations into Garg’s death “may take up to another three months or so”.

The SPF said despite the ongoing investigation, it has shared a copy of Garg’s autopsy report and preliminary findings with the High Commission of India on October 1, upon their request. The SPF is committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation into the case, and this takes time, it said.

Garg, 52, died in Singapore while swimming in the sea on September 19. He was cremated with state honours on September 23 in Assam.
