The polls for the 14th Indian President have concluded and it seems the country knew who was going to be elected. Ram Nath Kovind, an NDA candidate won by a large margin against his opponent Meira Kumar, who was a former Lok Sabha Speaker.
Ram Nath Kovind is India&rsquo;s 14th President and will take office from the current President Pranab Mukherjee once he leaves office on July 25th. &nbsp;The man is little known and is quite camer-shy. Seen very rarely in the media, here&rsquo;s all you need to know about India&rsquo;s next president.
&gt;&gt; Born on October 1st, 1945, in Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh, Ram Nath Kovind was the NDA candidate for the post of the President in the 2017 Indian elections.
&gt;&gt; Ram Nath Kovind is from the Dalit community and is a Dalit leader. He has been known to be closely associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) &ndash; a national volunteer group, and the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
&gt;&gt; Married to Savita Kovind on May 30th 1974, Kovind has a son and a daughter.
&gt;&gt; He joined the BJP in 1991 and subsequently served as the President of the Dalit Morcha between 1998 to 2002. He then went on to become the President of the All-India Koli Samaj and served as the spokesperson for the party
&gt;&gt; Incidentally the RSS is also the parent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s&nbsp; part BJP. The BJP controls a large number of seats in the state and national legislature.
&gt;&gt; Kovind&rsquo;s father was a farmer and Kovind went on to pursue his bachelors degree in commerce followed by a law degree from DAV college.
&gt;&gt; After completing is studies in the law, Kovind gave the Civil Services exam and passed only on the third attempt. But because he was selected for an allied service and not the IAS he turned down the position. Kovind then went on to practice law.
&gt;&gt;&nbsp; Kovind&rsquo;s rise in the cadres if lawyers was swift. He was appointed as the Central Government Advocate in the Delhi High Court from the year 1977 to 1979. Subsequently he also served as a Central Government standing counsel in the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993 and eventually went on to become the advocate-on-record of the Supreme Court.
&nbsp;&gt;&gt; He served as the personal assistant to the then Prime Minister &ndash; Morarji Desai in 1977-1978.
&gt;&gt; As a part of his philanthropic activities, Kovind provided free legal aid to the weaker sections of society and women at the Legal Aid Society in New Delhi.
&gt;&gt; When he was in parliament, Kovind used the powers he had and used the Members of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLADS) scheme to focus on issues like education in rural areas. He went on to get schools constructed in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
&gt;&gt; Someone with a penchant for education, Kovind visited Thailand, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, France, the United Kingdom and the United States on study tours
&gt;&gt; Kovind resigned as the Governor of Bihar after he was nominated as the NDA&rsquo;s candidate for the Presidential race. Current President Pranab Mukherjee accepted his resignation on June 20th 2017.
