REGIONAL Transport Offices (RTOs) are known to earn massive revenue every financial year. And for the year 2012-13, the Navi Mumbai RTO earned almost Rs 201 crore against the set target of Rs 211 crore. Revenue collected under the Motor Vehicles Act contributes approximately 85% to the RTO&rsquo;s earning.u00a0 <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/apr/RTO-1-500.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 336px;" /> Making money: While the revenue collected in the way of motor vehicle tax contributes approximately 85 per cent of the RTO&rsquo;s earning, the department made another Rs 3.71 crore in fines collected from motorists for overloading, excess passengers and expired vehicle fitness certificates. Registration of new vehicles also formed a crucial part of the revenue. A total of 59 imported vehicles, 17,395 motorcycles, 11,808 cars and 5,547 other kinds of vehicles were registered with the Navi Mumbai RTO in 2012-13. The numbers stood at 15,269 motorcycles, 13,288 cars and 5,467 other kinds of vehicles were registered for the financial year 2011-12. A senior RTO official, on condition of anonymity, said, &ldquo;The state had given us a target of Rs 211 crore and we managed to achieve 95 per cent of it. In 2011-12, number of vehicles whose cost was above Rs 20 lakh was 575, but the number fell to 558 in 2012-13. The cars include brands like Mercedes, BMW and Audi, to name a few.&rdquo; &ldquo;A lot of people from the city have been showing keen interest in getting numbers like 1, 2 and 9 for their vehicles, for which there is a special fee. Besides, numbers like 4,343 are also a lot in demand,&rdquo; said the RTO official. u00a0 Special numbers To get the special numbers, RTO charges motorists a particular amount. Motorists wanting to secure number 1 have to pay Rs 1 lakh, Rs 50,000 for number 2 and 9. The amount for securing number 4343 is Rs 7,500. u00a0 Rs 183 cr Revenue earned byu00a0the RTO in 2011-12 .
