After slipping past three completion deadlines, the Sahar Elevated Road, which is expected to drastically reduce travel time from the Western Express Highway (WEH) to the international airport, is now expected to be thrown open to motorists only in January next year.u00a0 <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/aug/Sahar.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 322px;" /> File pic Work on the ambitious project, which would allow motorists to zip to the international airport from the WEH in five minutes against the present 45 minutes, commenced in December 2009. An initial deadline was set for December 2012, but the sluggish pace of work meant that the cut-off date was extended to September 2013 and then again pushed back to December 2013. The resettlement and rehabilitation of project-affected people is said to be one of the vital reasons for the delay. &ldquo;The work of the much-awaited Sahar elevated road is on in full swing and we are confident of throwing it open for motorists by January,&rdquo; said Metropolitan Commissioner UPS Madan. Presently, construction of the underpass on the WEH is on at a war footing and will be complete by November-end. The construction of the concrete access road is also in progress. The first phase, under the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority&rsquo;s (MMRDA) jurisdiction, is nearly 90 per cent complete and the second phase, which is under the control of Mumbai International Airport Limited, is expected to be concluded by December. Salient features The six-lane approach road will have four entry and two exit points. The length of the proposed road is 2 km, and the cost of the project is pegged at Rs 287.37 crore. The project has been funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Once completed, the project will ease traffic congestion at Bahar Junction, and will provide relief to motorists going either to the airport or offices and other commercial establishments located in Andheri (E).
