Motorists using the University Road and the Sancheti hospital chowk and bridge can hope for a hassle-free drive in about a year-and-half at the crucial junction, which today sees major traffic jams during peak hours. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has invited tenders for the widening of the important bridge. Work is expected to begin in a month or two. Additional City Engineer, PMC, Vivek Kharwadkar said that a Central Railways (CR) technical team had already approved the plan submitted by the PMC.
"This was required since a railway line passes below the bridge and there are several overhead equipment. The Railways need to inform their motormen and technicians about any work of the kind near railway tracks, after which a plan is prepared that involves how trains would be affected in the coming months. That particular period's railway operations are then chalked out with back-up plans if trains are delayed. If required, the Railways request modifications in the projects, which we carry out," said Kharwadkar.
