A 38-year-old Colaba-based cable operator died after an army truck banged his scooter from behind, soon after he had dropped his daughter to school yesterday. The incident took place at 1.30 pm near the Colaba Defence Station, which is situated next to Backbay Depot, Cuffe Parade.
The victim, Ashok Yelappa, was a resident of Ambedkar Nagar, Colaba. “He had dropped his daughter to school and was on his way home when a BEST bus braked in front of his bike. Seeing that the bus had stopped, Yelappa, too, applied brakes. In a split second, an army truck rammed into his bike from the back,” said a police officer from Cuffe Parade police station.
The impact of the crash threw Yelappa off the bike, and he landed under the left tyre of the truck. He had suffered severe injuries to his head, spine and back, and was rushed to the hospital by some army personnel who were inside the truck. Doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
