If all goes to plan, Punekars would be travelling by Metro trains in 2021, after the much-awaited Pune Metro project was cleared by the state cabinet yesterday. The project proposal will now be forwarded to the Centre for final approval, which is likely to be favourable. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/oct/metro_3.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 212px;" /> Representation Pic To implement the project, a multipurpose vehicle, Pune Mahanagar Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMMRCL), will be established. &ldquo;We are happy that the Metro finally received the green signal. The project will ease the traffic problems of the city. The project took time because the state&rsquo;s finance ministry had raised few concerns on the cost earlier. They had demanded 20 per cent share from the local bodies, which was not practical. We have succeeded in resolving all concerns of the finance ministry,&rdquo; said Mohan Joshi, Congress MLC. The project includes two metro corridors &ndash; Vanaj to Ramwadi (14.92 km) and Pimpri to Swargate (16.59). The rail route is estimated to cost Rs 10,183 crore wherein both the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation will share 10 per cent of the cost. The remaining costs will be borne by the state government (20%), Central government (20%), while the balance 50 per cent cost will be capitalised by a loan. The entire Vanaj&ndash;Ramwadi corridor will be elevated, while the Pimpri-Swargate corridor will be underground and elevated. The deadline to completion of the project is 2021. The state government also approved the planned additional 12 kms track from Katraj to Swargate (5.5 kms) and Pimpri to Nigadi (4.5 kms). &ldquo;These additional routes were proposed by making supplementary provisions. The state government also approved it. The project will be implemented according to Delhi Metro Act. To generate revenue, development charges will be doubled and stamp duty will be increased by 1 per cent after completion of the project,&rdquo; said Arvind Shinde, Congress leader in the PMC. The proposal has been sent to the central government for final approval. &ldquo;Central government has already approved the project, but they wanted a detailed project report of both corridors. Hence, the proposal has been sent to the Centre, which will be approved soon.
