Government looking to accomodate 190 MLAs who don't have homes in Mumbai; Mulund is one of the options being considered
Finding homes in Mumbai is a Herculean task, so much so that the state’s housing minister in March had told this newspaper that buying a house in the city is a criminal waste of money (MiD DAY’s report on March 13).

But now this task has befallen the state that is working overtime to find suitable locations to house 190 legislators, who do not own homes in Mumbai.
According to a senior official in the Congress-led Democratic Front, the legislators have been demanding homes on the lines of the accommodation that is provided to sitting and former legislators at Worli and Versova. However, with few or no big plots available at these locations, the state is working on other options.
One of the options is to accommodate the MLAs at Rajyog Cooperative Housing society at Versova where a few homes are vacant. Another choice is the homes provided by CIDCO in Navi Mumbai.
However, the state has an uphill battle before them as the two aforementioned choices don’t have that many homes for all the legislators. Hence, now in an attempt to provide them with homes, the state is looking for another plot where they could house the remaining legislators and according to a source, a plot at Mulund is currently an option.
In an interesting twist, it was argued before Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan during a meeting held recently that there was approximately 40,000 sq ft FSI available with the legislator’s housing societies at Worli.
This is being demanded by home-seekers but the members of the societies in Worli want the FSI for themselves, a source claimed.
When asked, a senior official said legislators could demand for flats or a piece of land for their housing societies under the existing rules. The housing societies at Worli were allotted under the revenue Acts and flats made available at buildings constructed by MHADA in Versova were based on the MHADA act.u00a0
