A day after MiD DAY reported how the sub-engineers from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation&rsquo;s (BMC) road department were upset over the civic body&rsquo;s decision of penalising them for non-completion of road repair works, it has now been learnt that several engineers have decided to switch departments as a safety measure. <a href="http://news.mid-day.com/news/2012/oct/171012-mumbai-Engineers-union-takes-on-BMC-over-shoddy-work.htm"><img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2012/oct/print_6.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 354px; " /></a> MiD DAY&rsquo;s report on October 17 The meeting called by Mumbai Engineers Association (MEA) yesterday evening in Worli was attended by about 150 engineers from various departments. It was decided at the meeting that if Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte does not revoke his decision to penalise sub-engineers, the union would submit a mass transfer application to Kunte. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s unfair if seniors are targeting only sub-engineers for bad roads. I am seeking a transfer from road to another department,&rdquo; said a sub-engineer. When asked if it was easy to change departments, the engineer said he will seek help from influential sources to get a transfer. Sainath Rajadhyaksha, general secretary of MEA, said, &ldquo;Engineers did their job during monsoon, without taking leaves. Senior officials claimed that 95 per cent potholes were filled. Then how can they blame and fine a sub-engineer heft amounts ranging between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 15 lakh?&rdquo; He said all assistant and executive engineers would come forward and support sub-engineers. &ldquo;We will submit an application in two days seeking mass transfer of sub-engineers from the road department to other departments. They no longer want to work in the road department,&rdquo; said Rajadhyaksha. Senior union leader Sharad Rao said there was no provision in the Municipal Service Act to penalise civic employees. When contacted, Kunte said the civic body would fix accountability in all other departments as well and the administration was firm on punishing sub-engineers for failing to do their job. &ldquo;We will fix accountability, as they (sub-engineers) are responsible for not filling potholes in their respective wards. They were assigned the specific job to attend and rectify potholes. Also, we are ready to hear them out,&rdquo; said Kunte. u00a0
