Note reveals wife of deceased threatened him with police case; cops arrest woman and her brother

Four stormy years of marriage drove a 30-year-old man to suicide in Talegaon Dabhade. A suicide note spelling out why he took the extreme step was recovered by the police, who arrested the man's wife and brother-in-law.

The police said the suicide note said the wife of the deceased had threatened to lodge a police complaint against him.

Sanjay Shingade, a resident of Bhimashankar Colony in Talegaon, ended his life on June 27, hanging himself from the ceiling fan with a rope.

Shingade's father Nanasaheb filed a complaint with the police only after the last rites and other rituals were performed.

Shingade's wife Priya (26) and brother-in-law Ravindra Vaze (28) were arrested on Wednesday, soon after the FIR was registered.

The police said they had learnt Priya would not perform her duties as a wife in spite of not being employed anywhere. They said Shingade weathered behaviour such as refusal to cook or live with her in-laws for long, but the threat to lodge a complaint against him pushed him over the edge.

'Harassed by wife'
"Shingade was an employee at the Dehu Ordnance Depot. He got married to Priya in 2006, but was not happy with his married life. Priya had been harassing him over trivial issues," Police Inspector Sanjay Nikam said. "Priya and her brother Ravindra even went to Shingade's workplace and abused him recently."

The officer said Priya was earlier working on contract basis with the Maharashtra State Electricity Board, but was doing nothing these days.

"Priya used to abuse her husband, would refuse to cook, and insisted on living separately from her in-laws. She would not be home several nights and this she would do without telling anyone beforehand," Nikam said. "As a result of this outrageous behaviour, Shingade was disturbed."

Only after Shingade's father filed the complaint could investigations be conducted properly, and the suicide note was found at that juncture. "We found a suicide note by Sanjay Shingade saying his wife had threatened to lodge a police complaint against him," Nikam said. "Priya and her brother Ravindra have been arrested for abetting the suicide."
