Speeding and without a helmet, the boy jumped a speed breaker and lost control of his bike; pillion rider critical
New Year’s Eve spelt doom for a 17-year-old boy who died on the spot when his bike crashed into a wall on the Western Express Highway near Aarey Milk Colony around 11.40 pm on Monday. His friend, who was riding pillion, also sustained injuries on her neck and shoulders and is said to be in a critical condition.

According to Aarey Milk Colony police officials, the deceased, identified as Akshay Sambhaji Salunkhe, a resident of Dankar Rao Desai Marg, unit number 16, Aarey Colony, was the nephew of an Assistant Police Inspector of Vanrai Police Station.
Salunkhe and his neighbour Shraddha Mohite (16) were on their way to a friend’s house in Goregaon on Salunkhe’s motorcycle to celebrate the New Year. The duo crossed the Marol police camp area and did not see the speed breaker as they were going fast.
Due to the pace of the bike, the vehicle flew over the bump and crashed. Mohite fell off the bike there. However, Salunkhe tried to regain control of the two-wheeler but skidded and rammed the vehicle head–on into a concrete wall. He died on the spot.
“Salunkhe did not have a licence and was not wearing a helmet,” said a police officer from the Aarey Milk Colony police station.
While Salunkhe was declared dead on arrival at the Bhagwati hospital, Mohite was admitted for injuries on her head and shoulder.
She was later shifted to Sanjeevani hospital and is in a critical state.u00a0
