Nobody could tell, that an economics student's demand and supply interests would prove fruitful and lead her to an area as different as that of fabric and design. <img alt="" src="/imagedata/2010/jul/fashion.jpg" border="5" /> Barely three years old, Chennai-based Brass Tacks, was a label started by Anaka Narayanan after a rather unusual brainwave hit her back in her days in New York City. "I did college in NYC and soon started work there. u00a0 I loved the clothes there, the flattering cuts and all the silhouettes, but I missed fabric from home", says Anaka Narayanan. "When I returned to India, the fabric was present but the Indian market hardly had variety in affordable fashion. There were no well-cut wearable clothes", she adds. Surrounded by fabric at an early age, fabric-sense to her came quite naturally, thanks to her mother who ran a popular hand-woven saree boutique. Self-taught in design, she is known for her cuts, colours and well-fitted cowl necklines. Designing, she claims is the easiest part of running a store as compared to the procurement of fabric, accounting and sales. "Over the years, my own sensibilities in design have expanded. My clothes though simple, have a distinct quirky twist", she tells us. "I have wanted to see how the market reacts with respect to my brand. People in Bangalore are more willing to experiment and there is a lot more acceptability with regard to western clothing", says Narayanan.
