They are opposing the private franchisee system being contemplated by the company and the shutting down of certain power plants in the state. Most daily maintenance work and regular power supply functions will be affected as a result of the strike. "We attend to around 15 to 20 line damage complaints daily in the urban and rural areas of Pune. Line damages leads to sudden power outages and if not repaired quickly can give a harrowing time for consumers," said an MSEDCL official on condition of anonymity. Officials said linemen and lower ring technicians, who are part of the strike, are the backbone of the company's field staff doing all kinds of work. "In case of a short circuit on a supply line, it will remain unattended as the linemen are on strike. Consumers might have to go without power," said another official requesting anonymity. Deputy Director (Vigilance &amp; Secburity) Commander (retd) Shivaji Indalkar said, "The strike will affect the detection of power theft cases." Pune region Public Relations Officer (PRO) Chandrakant Gurav and Chief Engineer Siddharth Nagtilak remained unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts.
