Erode (Tamil Nadu): A 30-year old man drowned while attempting to rescue his wife who slipped and fell into a canal in the district, police said. Bharathy (25) was washing clothes in the Lower Bhavani Project Canal at Vellode Karukkankadu last evening when she fell into the swirling water.

Her husband Kadirvelu jumped into the canal to save her, but was washed away. Meanwhile, some others rescued her, police said. In two rain-related incidents in the district, two women died at different places.
