Nashik Police has arrested two persons in connection with firing at the ex-Malegaon mayor and All India India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen functionary Abdul Malik Yunus Isa Sheikh, officials said. The incident happened in the wee hours on Monday on the Old Agra Road.

According to a PTI report, the police without divulging much, said that the attack on ex-Malegaon mayor Abdul Sheikh was the fallout of a land deal.  The PTI report further stated that Sheikh, aged 39 was grievously injured after two bike-borne persons attacked him and was hospitalised.

Reportedly, CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity had recorded the incident and based on it, the police on Tuesday arrested accused Farooq Patel and his aide and registered a case against them. The two had allegedly shot at ex-Malegaon mayor Abdul Sheikh, Additional Superintendent of Police Aniket Bharti said at a press conference in Malegaon.

According to the report, during interrogation, the accused told the cops that the attack on ex-Malegaon mayor Abdul Sheikh was the fallout of a land deal in Mhalde Shivar.

Reportedly, the cops have seized a pistol, two live cartridges and the bike used in the attack from the arrested persons.

The officials told PTI that Sheikh was attacked while sitting with others outside a building supplies shop on the Old Agra Road. The incident sparked anxiety in Malegaon, and authorities increased security in the powerloom town, the report stated.

Mohammed Ismail Abdul Khalique, an All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA from Malegaon (Central), alleged on Monday that Malegaon's peace and order situation has deteriorated in recent days. He also stated that he would raise the issue in the assembly and with the home department.

Meanwhile, Asaduddin Owaisi, on the day of the attack on ex-Malegaon mayor Abdul Sheikh, urged the Maharashtra government to conduct a probe into the incident.

"AIMIM Malegaon president & former mayor Abdul Malik was shot thrice last night. He has been taken to Nashik for treatment. I spoke to his brother Dr Khalid on phone. We stand firmly with Abdul Malik’s family. CM Eknath Shinde, DGP Maharashtra must take immediate steps. This is a conspiracy and the murderers should be arrested as soon as possible," he wrote.
