A picnic turned tragic for a group 15 students from College of Engineering, Pune, as two of them drowned at Devbaug beach in Malvan on Saturday morning. File Pic. Police said that the group was playing volleyball on the beach and four of them ventured into the sea to bring the ball. The water was deep and the four, not knowing how to swim, were sucked in by the current. The Malvan police identified the deceased as Sushant Vijay Yadav (22) of Karad in Satara district and Shrikant Subhashrao Nagalwad (23) from Nanded. They were students of first year mechanical engineering. The rescued students are Yogesh Sukhvilas Prabhu (23) and Joy Lobo (25), both residents of Navi Mumbai. &ldquo;The group of 15 boys were vacationing after the examinations got over on May 2, and landed at Devbaug on May 9,&rdquo; said SL Tadvi, the station house officer of Malvan police station.u00a0He said that they came to Devbaug beach on Friday evening and hit the beach. However, some fishermen and locals warned them not to go to the beach in the evening. &ldquo;In the morning at 7 am, they hit the beach and started playing volleyball. When the ball fell into the waters four of them rushed into the sea and were sucked in,&rdquo; said Tadvi. He added, &ldquo;Some fishermen and other students tried to rescue them. Mahesh Raut (25), one of the students in the group who knew swimming, managed to pull out Lobo. The fishermen rescued Prabhu and Nagalwad. However, Nagalwad died on the way to a hospital. Yadav&rsquo;s body was fished out at around 9.30 am.&rdquo; The Malvan police have handed over the bodies to the respective families after the post-mortem.
