Eight people were killed and five injured when a jeep fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Pithoragar on Tuesday, police said, reported the PTI.

The incident occurred in Suni village in the Thal area while the passengers were travelling to Bokta village, they said.


The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to plunge into a deep gorge. Eight people, including five women and three men, died on the spot, Thal SHO Shankar Singh Rawat said, according to the PTI.



He added that upon receiving information about the accident, police and a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team reached the site and began rescue operations with the help of local residents.

The injured were rushed to a hospital in Muwani, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Pithoragarh District Disaster Management Officer Bhupendra Singh Maher confirmed that the bodies were recovered from the gorge. They were all locals, as per the PTI.

Meanwhile, PM Modi expressed grief following the incident.

In a post on X, the PMO wrote, "Saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap. May the injured recover soon."

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the tragic road accident in the Muwani area of Pithoragarh district that claimed eight lives.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister wrote, "The extremely sad news of a vehicle accident in the Muwani area of Pithoragarh district has been received. I pray to God that the souls of those who lost their lives in the accident find a place at His divine feet and that the grieving families are granted the strength to bear this immense pain."

CM Dhami further said that he has directed the district administration to ensure proper and timely treatment for the injured at the hospital and prayed for their speedy recovery.

The Chief Minister has directed the district administration and relief and rescue teams to expedite the rescue operation. He has asked to ensure that proper and free medical facilities are provided to the injured on time, the Chief Minister's Office said in a statement.

Pithoragarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Rekha Yadav confirmed the incident and stated that a rescue operation is currently underway.

"Eight people died after a vehicle carrying 13 people crashed near the Suni bridge in Muwani town. The police officials have reached the spot and rescue operations are underway," SP Yadav said, according to the ANI.
