The Vishrantwadi police have decided to form Gram Rakshak Dal or village defence parties (VDP) in 11 fringe villages under its 75-sq km jurisdiction. The VDPs will help to maintain law and order in their jurisdiction, as the police station is facing a staff crunch. Senior police inspector, Motichand Rathod of the Vishrantwadi police station said that the increasing population in the jurisdiction is leading to an increase in illegal activities and disputes. And considering the manpower shortage in the department, VDPs can assist in checking problems. u00a0 &ldquo;There are villages like Wadmukhwadi, Kajwe, Kotwalwadi, Nirgud, Dubhulgaon, Pathare Wadi, Kalewadi, Dighi, Tingarenagar, Charholi and Adarshnagar in our jurisdiction and we have decided to form VDPs with around 15 to 20 men from each village. They will be given sticks, fluorescent jackets, whistles and identity cards, and trained to handle situations if a crime or natural calamity takes place in their area,&rdquo; Rathod said, adding that several cases of theft, dacoity and robbery were taking place in far-flung rural areas, apart from other illegal activities and property disputes. &ldquo;With the activation of VDPs, it will be easy for the police to tackle such cases,&rdquo; he said. He added that no funds would be given to the respective area police stations and they would have to bear expenses for activities. The Vishrantwadi police station, which comes under the city police commissionerate, will be the first to form such parties.u00a0 Going by the book According to Section 63 of the Bombay Police Act 1951, the Superintendent of Police has been empowered to constitute voluntary bodies called VDPs for the protection of persons, security of the properties and safety in villages. As per Section 63 (b) (7), members so constituted will discharge such duties as may be determined by the SP.u00a0
