With the traffic police cracking the whip on those riding two-wheelers without a helmet, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has also jumped onto the bandwagon.

Regional Transport Officer Jitendra Patil instructed motor vehicle inspectors yesterday that applicants for permanent two-wheeler driving licences will be allowed to take the test only if they are wearing a helmet. He also sent a notice to all staff members stating that those coming on two-wheelers will not be allowed to enter the RTO premises from today if they are not wearing a helmet. The same rule will apply to citizens coming to the RTO for any work.
&ldquo;It is mandatory for applicants appearing for the permanent driving licence test for two-wheelers to wear a helmet. We had not been implementing the rule effectively, but, with the increasing number of fatal accidents in the city, we thought it was important to take this step,&rdquo; said Patil.
&ldquo;We will ensure that the rule is followed religiously. We have circulated a notice to all our staff members also to wear a helmet if they are riding on a two-wheeler. There will be no exceptions and even if our staff members are caught entering the RTO premises on a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet, they will have to pay a fine of R100.&rdquo;
Implemented On an average, more than 300 applicants appear for the permanent driving licence test for two-wheelers everyday at the Pune RTO&rsquo;s Phulenagar premises. Yesterday, more than 100 were sent back as they were not wearing a helmet while appearing for the test.
Phulenagar RTO in-charge, Deputy Regional Transport Officer Anil Valiv said, &ldquo;We are going to make the rule more stringent from next week. Riders without a helmet will not be allowed to enter the premises. We want to spread awareness about the importance of wearing a helmet.&rdquo;
