It seems that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region DevelopmentAuthority (MMRDA) and Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) are not aware of the goings-on along the 11.07-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG). Both agencies seem unaware that the flowerbed, which has been constructed on the median of the road beneath the metro carriageway, is being used to dump debris. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/apr/ranjeet-story.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 384px;" /> Debris is routinely being dumped on the VAG corridor median road, which is meant for flowerbeds During construction of the 11.07 km VAG corridor, space was saved under the carriageway of the metro for a flowerbed, which was to be developed to beautify the area once construction was completed. However, the fact is that at many places along the corridor, the flowerbed is being used to dump debris. On the metro rail stretch along the Andheri-Kurla road, for instance, it has been noticed that the flowerbed has become an ideal spot for dumping debris. At various other places, construction material debris including tiles, bricks and concrete material debris have been dumped. Over two months ago, NGO Athak Seva Sangh sent a letter of complaint to the MMRDA stating the same. In the letter, the NGO has alleged that the contractor is not monitoring the work properly and due to a lack of security guards illegal dumping prevails at night. At certain spots, the contractor may also be involved in dumping debris, the NGO alleges. When questioned about the same, MMRDA Joint Project Director Dilip Kawatkar, said, &ldquo;It is wrong to suggest that the contractor is dumping the debris. Why would he when there is a plan to develop a flowerbed there? We will ensure that more security guards are deployed at various places so we can take action against those dumping the debris.&rdquo; When the letter was sent to the MMRDA, senior officials promised the NGO that strict action would be taken.
