Metro lines are expanding, making this travel mode a vital part of Mumbai’s changing commuter landscape
CCTV image captures the metro staff rushing to the child's aid.
It was heartwarming to learn that a station attendant at Bangur Nagar Metro station in Goregaon intervened after a two-year-old boy strayed outside. The incident took place over the past weekend. The child had stepped out of the train alone just as the doors were closing.
The alert attendant, Sanket Chodankar, alerted the train operator to reopen the doors and rushed to ensure the child’s safety within seconds. The station has platform screen doors in addition to the train doors, and owing to the timely intervention by the staff, both were opened to safely reunite the child with his family.
Hats off to the staffer, but this sheds light on the need to adhere to safety protocols at Metro stations. Metro lines are expanding, making this travel mode a vital part of Mumbai’s changing commuter landscape.
Adhere to safety protocols on the escalators. Sporadically, one sees people trying to rush down the escalator as there are announcements of a Metro train arriving on a certain platform. This can be dangerous as it may mean falling on a moving escalator.
Stand behind the line demarcated for the arriving train and wait for it to arrive and doors to open before stepping in. Wait for people to exit and then enter. Keep a wary eye on kids who may run on platforms, especially the Aqua line, which is not too crowded as of now, and slip on the slick floor. When in doubt, speak to customer care for correct information rather than asking commuters who may have good intent, but do not always know how to guide you.
Do not try to push through the gates and wait for them to open when swiping the ticket. Do not take on the staff, but engage in dialogue and ask for clarity if you do not understand. Guardians/families need to keep a check and eye on their children inside the Metro too.
