Now that the rains have taken off with dire warnings peppering social media and mobile screens, Mumbaikars will be off to enjoy waves and revel in lush, green vistas. With waterfalls in spate during the rains, there is the very real danger of people perched on slick rocks, revelling in the cascading water being pulled in by the strong current.
At times, they are standing at the top from where the waterfall starts, posing for their selfies to immortality. Some even have their back to the waterfall trying to take some kind of selfie with the gushing waterfall in the background. That is breaking one cardinal rule, never turn your back to the water, whether that be a lake, sea or even a waterfall.
One needs immense caution around these fiercely beautiful falls, celestial backgrounds they are, but they do hold dangers within. Posing on any edge from atop is not only dangerous but a death wish. Slick rocks can send you careering over the edge in an instant. Even so-called dry patches are deceptive. Keep a very, very respectable distance and if there are barriers, staying behind them is non-negotiable.
Sacrifice the selfie, do not sacrifice your life or limb for that matter. Nothing is worth those 100 or thousands of social media likes not even instant social media superstardom.
Water bodies demand attention, respect and those pictures on mobiles are a distraction. Stay alert in all scenarios and do not cave in to peer pressure or be inveigled into stunts at water’s edge lured by any kind of dare. Immense responsibility and wisdom in the vicinity of waterfalls means a safe return home to loved ones. Never underestimate the power and sometimes unpredictable nature of water.
