A Thane-based woman was allegedly cheated of Rs 12.5 lakh by a man posing as a senior government official who promised her son admission to IIT Bombay. An FIR has been registered against the accused for cheating, forgery, and impersonation. This report has particular resonance as the admission season will be upon us soon, and several parents will be looking out for their children to get admission into select institutions.
As reported by the news agency Press Trust of India, the accused, who resided in the same housing complex as the woman, posed as an Indian Revenue Service officer. He further claimed to have a strong influence in various government departments. He conned and collected Rs 12,50,000 from the victim over a period of time in 2023. The target eventually realised that she had been fleeced and filed a complaint, after which an FIR was filed.
Watch out as the admission charlatans will be out in droves, once exams are over. Why would an individual be able to give your child admission to a prestigious institution? Even if he poses as a government official/an individual in a powerful position, that person will be unable to do so.
Only look for admission through legitimate ways, do not fall for these scam schemes, however alluring they may seem. Ask questions, and if the answers are unclear and evasive, you already know to stay away. Approach the institutes one is aspiring to be admitted to and find out everything about them and the admission process. Call out the fraudsters as they are a red flag from the word go, sensing desperation and a system where there are few seats and high demand.
