Recently, the police arrested a serial molester with nothing to go on but his shadow on CCTV footage. The accused allegedly molested three women in a span of a couple of months, our report said. The molester targeted lone women while he was riding a motorcycle. As he passed by them, he would touch their chest or back and then vanish.
The suspect, police sources said, is a 25-year-old electrician, and he committed these crimes in the vicinity of a police station. The police relied on certain minor clues, but a big factor was the CCTV surveillance; many times, only a shadow was visible in the footage, even the motorbike’s number plate was not clear, by which he was caught. This shows that our CCTV surveillance across the city, must be up to speed, as it is a vital factor in crime detection and nabbing the accused.
We are currently on an upgrading spree, especially when it comes to commuting. We have political leaders coming in every single month if not week, inaugurating new projects and infra arms with much fanfare. While this itself has people for it and against it, that is not the focus of this edit.
We must see that our CCTV is keeping pace. Road works or any public works for that matter should be considered incomplete till top quality surveillance is installed and operational, at the same time as the facility starts working.
In fact, leaders should insist that grand openings should also include CCTV feed. Surveillance has become an invaluable eye for the city. Just like the ‘third eye’ in cricket, which is now part of the game, CCTV is part of our lives. Make it top class.
