Tucked away inside our film section, was a small snippet with a big message. The snippet set that a video of superstar Salman Khan’s brother, actor Sohail Khan riding a motorcycle in Bandra without a helmet recently went viral, drawing sharp criticism online. Responding to the backlash, Sohail has issued a public apology and urged riders to prioritise safety.
Taking to Instagram, he wrote that he would like to request all bike riders to wear helmets. He admitted that he did avoid wearing them at times as he felt claustrophobic, but added that was no excuse for not wearing one. The actor said he usually rides late at night at a slow pace, with minimal traffic. Then, again even that is not an excuse. He assured fellow riders that he will make a genuine effort to overcome his claustrophobia. He vowed to follow rules henceforth.
This is a good way to go about reinforcing the helmets shield heads, save lives message. When an actor who has a platform to say something, sends out correct communication then he may not know but he certainly influences a lot of people. That is precisely the reason why companies rope in these people to promote their product. They know that their faces and voices sell. Today, we live in a visual world, pictures, celebrities, fame is the name of the game.
It is time our stars are used effectively for correct communication. Today, Bollywood and cricket have the most visible celebrities. Top actors, cricketers are instantly recognisable and they have been used for certain social service messages. We need to amplify these messages with different service arms in the city cashing in on that fame.
Sohail Khan’s apology, advice and ability to point a finger at himself is heartening. Wear a helmet, even an actor knows he deserves admonishing for not doing so.
