In one of the rare, pleasant fallouts of the aviation crisis, teams from Western and Central Railway recently reached Terminal 1 and 2 of Mumbai airport to assist passengers stranded due to the ongoing crisis.
There were help desks at both airports to guide and assist passengers with information on additional trains to help with ticket bookings, our report quoted a Railway PRO as saying.
Indian Railways has introduced 84 special trains to support passengers affected by widespread flight cancellations. These services aimed to ease travel for thousands caught in the disruption, with railway zones across the country adding more trains and deploying extra resources.
For days now, we have witnessed, or may have been directly affected ourselves by, the nightmare situation. Hours at the airport, missed events, meetings... the list is long. What we can say is that our communication channels certainly need to be sharper, with better information relayed to passengers by those responsible. Here, we saw certain junior staffers facing the heat alone, while there should have been clear, crisp communication from the highest in the airlines.
We are heartened, though, by the Railway initiative. Even more stellar is the fact that help desks were set up at the airport itself, and passengers may have had some option.
Even help desks are a favourable development as this means clear information being given to people, and alternatives cited. We are also enthused about one transport arm coming to the ‘rescue’ when another one reported a crisis.
This is the kind of coordination the city needs. If trains stop running for some reason, we must see our cabs and buses come to the rescue. If cabs or autos go on strike, we have our trains and more buses. All transport arms should complement each other.
