One cannot even begin to comprehend the extent of grief of families who lost their loved ones in a recent Mumbai train tragedy.
A group of commuters alighted from a stationary train and started walking on the tracks. This happened after railway employees went on a flash strike. A couple of people walking on the track were hit by an oncoming train. Three persons have died, with several others injured. Train tragedies, unfortunately, have become part of our landscape. Yet we cannot help but feel very deeply for those who perished and whose families now have to struggle to cope with the grief and suffering.
This, once again, highlights the importance of clear announcements in areas where a large number of people gather. Railway stations are prime amongst these. There needs to be a very hi-tech, absolutely audible and clear announcement system that over a frenzied station with decibel levels going through the roof.
A clear case of command and coordination means correct information by the relevant person will be passed on to the announcer. The announcer, then, has to relay this over a super system to commuters both in the train and on the platform. This official announcement, then, needs to be followed to the T. Yet, for this to happen, commuters need to be reassured by an authoritative voice.
Uncertainty and the worst of all, silence means panic, rumours and knee-jerk reactions. Chaos and confusion can lead to injury and death when you are dealing with these numbers and such a fraught, frightening situation. Announcements bring calm, composure and steady thought so important at these times. No announcements or information means an invitation to disaster and death. We simply refuse to learn from our mistakes.
