With less than 24 hours to go for the 21st edition of the Mumbai Marathon, it is time to get into the spirit, even if you are not competing. What makes Mumbai different from the other marathon cities in the world is the enthusiasm of the people, the encouragement they offer runners, not just the elite ones but amateurs, too, some plodding along, struggling to get to the finish line.
Runners who come in to race from other cities and overseas, too, have often spoken about one of the best things about the Mumbai marathon — the boost they get from those who line the route.
There is nothing more encouraging for tired legs and burning lungs than supportive cheers. The shouting urges the mind to dig deep in its reserves and pull something out with little to nothing left in the tank. Runners go that extra mile or even five on encouragement alone.
People must adhere to rules and keep their cars in the compound or away from the main roads. Even though traffic opens at a stipulated time, it is respectful to avoid driving for at least six hours. It shows that you have consideration for runners trying to finish the race. Remember, too, that the Coastal Road has been included in this event so try to keep off that too even if opened.
Do not ridicule runners on the course, do not judge if they are huffing and puffing on the inclines. It takes courage to go to the start line, and the marathon distance of 42.195 km is humbling, to say the least. Do not pass sexually charged remarks at women runners; it is disgusting and shows gross disrespect.
At 21, the Mumbai marathon has matured, and so have those who line the route. Show that through exemplary conduct, and be proud of Mumbai, at the same time make Mumbai proud of you, too.
