Bhushan Gagrani met Shivaji Park residents
Addressing concerns about dust pollution from the red soil at the Shivaji Park precinct, municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani recently met residents and carried out an inspection of the park ground and its surrounding walkway. Gagrani assured locals that a long-term solution to the problem of dust pollution would be decided in consultation with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
Our report stated the BMC began laying American Bermuda grass — considered useful for sports fields that are subjected to regular wear and tear due to activities — on the ground on two test plots on June 18, covering approximately 200 sq m, as an experimental measure to curb dust pollution, in line with MPCB directives and on the basis of a report submitted by IIT-B. The results would form the basis of a feasibility report to be submitted to the MPCB. Based on its findings, the civic body had decided to take a call on whether to extend grass turfing across the entire ground.
It is heartening to see the senior-most officer actually listening to residents. Now, with reassurances and promises must come action.
While expert deductions must find the basis for solving the problem, communication channels with locals must also remain open as to the efficacy of the solution, if niggling problems remain and, of course, maintenance needed if any.
Meanwhile, the BMC must also, while working on the dust issue, look at the iconic ground, maintenance of the katta where people sit, tiles have come off there and most importantly that it remains open.
There is a designated set of days for public gatherings at this park and this should be adhered to. Concentrate not just on dust, but on keeping this space for people to enjoy the outdoors. That should be sacrosanct.
