The Mumbai Police Crime Branch Unit 1 has filed a case against a 52-year-old man accused of misleading officials at the police commissioner’s office. He allegedly claimed to have connections with a Union minister’s personal assistant, hoping to influence the outcome of his visit. The incident took place on Tuesday inside the new administrative building of the Mumbai Police Headquarters during the weekly public grievance hearing, which is attended by the police commissioner.
According to the FIR filed by Constable Yogesh Hanumant Abke, 34, of the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU), the accused has been identified as Dhirajkumar Chiranjilal Vyas, while another man, Bharat Mann, is under investigation. According to the police, Vyas had approached the commissioner’s office with a complaint regarding financial transactions.
During the meeting, he allegedly claimed that Bharat Mann, personal assistant to a Union minister, had instructed officers to resolve his issue without delay. When officers verified the number provided by Vyas, the WhatsApp display showed the Ashoka Emblem, raising suspicion. A follow-up check with the Union minister’s office confirmed that no person named Bharat Mann was employed there.
Constable Abke then escorted Vyas to the Crime Branch Unit 1 office, where a detailed inquiry confirmed that the claims were false. Following the probe, a case was registered against Vyas and Mann under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for impersonation, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. Police said Vyas has been served a notice and released as per procedure. Efforts are on to trace the second accused and determine the motive behind the impersonation attempt.
