Several news outlets highlighted that quick-commerce companies have done away with the ‘10-minute-delivery’ claim after the intervention of Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya over concerns for the safety of delivery partners.
The minister had met with officials from Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy, and Zomato. After that, he told companies to eliminate rigid delivery time promises to protect workers. Media reports state that these tight delivery times are putting pressure on delivery riders, and these then compromise their safety on the roads, to stick to the timeline.
One hopes that deleting the 10-minute delivery rule from branding, social media, advertising fliers and banners is done quickly (within 10 minutes would be ideal). Though these promises may be kept, company seniors cannot give verbal instructions to their staff to zip deliveries within 10 minutes. A reasonable time window, keeping in mind road conditions and the traffic situation, will be ideal.
We have seen delivery riders taking to the streets, riding hell for leather as they need to adhere to these timings. They break rules at will. They climb on the sidewalks, manoeuvring their bikes on the pavement. Their wrong-side riding has now unfortunately become part of the traffic landscape in the city.
We have seen them take packets from their parked bikes, many of these are parked haphazardly in whatever space they can find and hare towards buildings, rushing into elevators and ringing doorbells frantically as the 10-minute deadline looms.
This is not to say that no other drivers or riders break rules, but these riders are particularly perilous. They put themselves in danger, and others on the road are endangered too because of their risky riding. Instead of time stipulations, these companies must teach road discipline and safety, rewarding riders for a blemish-free record.
