Vintage car collectors and owners have been appealing to the state government to earmark land and develop a space for a vintage car museum in the city.

The city witnessed a vintage car exhibition, where several collectors spoke about the importance of a special space for these cars. They claimed that Mumbai has some of the best such automobiles, which to be showcased for public viewing. Otherwise, the public has next to nil chance of seeing history on wheels.

Except for maybe once a year, when the public can see vintage cars in the annual exhibition here and catch a glimpse of them in the exciting rally on our roads, they do not see a vintage/classic car except in the movies. It will be excellent if a museum comes up and gives the public an opportunity to see these cars at any time at their convenience.

Several experts pointed out that the museum is sure to be a tourist magnet, as car lovers are sure to make the trip to see the golden oldies. These experts are talking from experience, as many of them travel overseas, especially to see rare cars at a museum or even collaborate with collectors across borders, with them going to the respective places to look at the cars.

Automobile association officials and vintage car owners spoke in unison about the museum being a significant draw for overseas visitors. There were opinions expressed that if not in Mumbai proper, a facility on the outskirts might work well too, given that transport connectivity has improved in recent years.

Let the state government give this serious thought. Maybe the numbers at the exhibition, which are humongous, may be convincing enough to add yet another attraction to the state’s tourism map.
