Let this ground see football, hockey and cricket thrive and the ground remain open to those who used it earlier, even if management changes, with adherence to all rules

Months after the contested Wilson College Gymkhana ground was handed over to the Jain International Organisation (JIO), senior staff, teachers, and students of Wilson College assembled at the open space opposite Marine Drive as the facility’s signboard was taken down on Monday morning, this paper reported.
The state government had in 2024, given the lease of this plot to JIO for 30 years. Contesting this decision, the college authorities subsequently filed a civil writ petition in the Bombay High Court. This is not about the controversy or which party gets the ground or the ongoing court case.
As a newspaper, we root for keeping the gymkhana open for sports activities. Let this ground see football, hockey and cricket thrive and the ground remain open to those who used it earlier, even if management changes, with adherence to all rules.
The gymkhanas on the Marine Drive stretch are shiny jewels and we need to keep them open for people, rather than closed off for any reason. We need every bit of open space for our budding athletes.
Most people know that being outdoors, playing sport at any level, practising a new game has tremendous mental benefits not just physical.
It is a complete stress buster and today we know the importance of mental health. The subject in fact was amplified during Covid when grounds and outdoors sporting activities were closed and so many were confined indoors.
As a city, we are starved of open recreational spaces, ironically, we are talking about being this great multi-sport nation by such and such a year but taking away place to play for our children. This is counter to a sporting ecosystem. Let us keep that beautiful SoBo strip open with all rules being and give civilians the best gift of all —the upsides of being outdoors.
