Amid all the stories of doom and gloom in the monsoon, there are some that make one want to cheer. Case in point is our report about the downpour, with a school bus marooned in severe waterlogging near Matunga police station. Six children, two women staff members, and the driver were trapped for nearly an hour.
Once alerted, a senior police officer and his team reached the spot and rescued everyone within two minutes, bringing them safely to the police station. The police provided refreshments to the children to comfort them after the ordeal.
While the refreshments are certainly a sweet gesture by our cops, what this shows is that it is always good to alert relevant authorities/agencies when in crisis situations. This is when one has time and opportunity to do so. While concerned and helpful citizens can alleviate certain situations, when one has a chance to draw attention to authorities to effect a rescue or for help needed. Here, it was wise for the people trapped to await some help as the police had the manpower and means to bring the children safely to the police station.
The report did say that the water level was significantly high, so bringing the kids out of the bus and into the police station may be challenging for laypeople, however good the intention. This was a wise way of going about it. There is of course times when quick intervention is key but there are times when one can help by calling helpline numbers or awaiting experts. When there is an option, the expert route is a better choice simply because of the training they have had.
In any case, such responses also strengthen the citizen-police faith and are hugely reassuring for citizens. Do see that one at least has basic knowledge of helpline numbers or nearest police stations one can approach if needed. More power to such responses.
