Celebrations are ongoing post the big Women’s World Cup win on Sunday. It is heartening to note that the women are already looking ahead, stating that this win was only a start and they aim to dominate not just in 50 overs but all formats of the game.
There is a lot of talk about how this win will act as a springboard for more girls to take to the game. One of the big factors to make sports training accessible and bring more women to the playing fields is safety. Make our public transport safe so that girls can make the trip to maidans/pools/gyms/open spaces on their own and do not need to be chaperoned by the family, after they are old enough to travel on their own.
Safety is key for our girls. Sometimes, it is challenging only to get to the sporting venue. The public transport may be unsafe after evening hours, or the road may not be well-lit; there can be any or several factors that can put off girls from commuting to the training ground.
Then, authorities have to ensure that the maidans are safe, gyms or courts are safe too, especially if girls are training alone or in ones or twos. They need to feel that the environment they inhabit is secure and do not feel in any danger while training. Mental health or your mental state plays a significant part in sport, and the girls will not give their 100 per cent if they are tense about their surroundings or how they will make the trip back to their homes.
Ensure training camps, travel and stay are safe, too, as athletes have to travel outside to train and compete. This is such a seminal aspect of the entire making of champions ecosystem. Inspiration, money, accessibility, and coaching are all part of the package, but safety is the non-negotiable base layer or foundation of that pyramid.
