The Mumbai Police recently issued an order, declaring all 27 Mumbai Metro Aqua Line-3 station entry and exit gates ‘no parking zones.’
In an official traffic notification, Mumbai Police said Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line) is fully functional and operational, spanning 33.5 km. It has 27 underground stations and each of it has entry/exit gates at ground level, and it has been observed that motor vehicles are parked near these gates, causing traffic congestion and obstruction to the commuters and public. So in order to prevent danger, obstructions and inconveniences to the public, a ‘no parking order’ was being issued.
While the order may be issued, we want to see action on the ground and this should be implemented without delay once the order is out. It should also be consistent and no-parking signs put up near the entrance/edit of these stations, warning people against parking their vehicles in this space.
We must keep the spaces free for commuters to walk through, this is a basic safety requirement. We have witnessed how the road outside bus stops has become a parking strip with buses then stopping near the cars and passengers forced to walk on the roads to board the bus, as vehicles zoom by.
This paper has highlighted how taxi parking spots have also been used by private cars with our kaali-peelis scrounging around for parking, especially at night. All this shows the need for keeping some space near public commuting facilities free for a convenient entry/exit for passengers. We hope this is done for other Metro lines too, now that we will see more lines opening this year.
