Following leopard sightings reported over the past few days, teams from the south division of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) visited the Pratibha Sankalp area in Dindoshi and conducted awareness sessions, explaining dos and don’ts to residents, our report said.
Recent sightings prompted locals to alert forest officials, after which a rapid response team, along with a veterinary officer, reached the spot and carried out an inspection.
Officials said awareness drives were conducted across the society and neighbouring residential complexes to sensitise people about safety measures.
Officials said leopard sightings along the periphery of SGNP and in Aarey Milk Colony are not unusual, with videos of such appearances frequently surfacing on social media.
These awareness drives are welcome and in fact, they are a must for those living in the vicinity. As we push development, it is a fact that we are encroaching on and breaching animals’ boundaries. The result is increasing conflict.
Signage about what to do in case of encountering a leopard, lessons in schools, especially in the area, are ways to make people better able to handle these situations.
Awareness drives should be consistent and driven by experts. These may also include first-hand accounts from locals who encounter an animal and have handled the situation wisely.
Members must attend these rather than brush them off, saying they do not need the lessons or that this will never happen to them. Stay informed, empowered, and able.
