The Matunga Z Bridge, a crucial pedestrian link between the Central and Western Railway stations, has become the latest casualty of bureaucratic buck-passing, our report said. While commuters dodge trash daily, the BMC and Indian Railways continue to point fingers at each other over who is responsible for keeping the bridge clean. Post our report, one is happy to see that the bridge has been cleaned and the reporting, with pictures has made an impact.

The bridge connects key educational hubs which including IES, Raja Shivaji school complex, Ruia, Ruparel, Khalsa, Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, and Welingkar. Railway officials clarified that the bridge is technically a civic bridge under the BMC, since no ticket is required to cross it. Railways only carried out the structural upgrade using BMC funds.

Civic officials before the impactful report leading to action had said there is no specific policy for cleaning foot over bridges, with beat chowkies traditionally covering streets and alleys. They have been cited as using the placatory phrase: we will look into the matter. While it has been cleaned now, the deadlock has proved once again that different agencies indulge in finger pointing and passing the buck. This is to the exasperation of citizens.

This is not referencing this particular case. A similar pattern is seen across when people ask questions about public infra work. They are told so and so is responsible. When they approach that person they are told to return to the original as the latter is not in charge of that work. People are in an absolute tizzy wondering in the end, who exactly is the go to person as they try to make some headway.

It is time to bring an end to this rigmarole, merry-go-round, passing the parcel whatever one would like to call it. A clearly defined role and responsibility means people know who to tap and press for action.
