Mumbai car crash highlights danger of loose manhole covers before monsoon

A car accident on Mumbai’s Malabar Hill, allegedly caused by a loose manhole cover, has renewed concerns over civic safety ahead of the monsoon. The incident highlights the urgent need for authorities to inspect, secure and repair manhole and gutter covers to prevent avoidable accidents

It was too near but thankfully yet too far for a well-known city chef, who claimed he suffered a car accident because of a loose manhole cover.

In our report on Wednesday, we cited how the 60-plus-year-old man was driving his car down Malabar Hill towards Kemps Corner when it went over a manhole. Apparently, the loose cover dislodged from its place and lodged beneath the car. The vehicle swerved sharply and crashed into a light pole.
