Celebrations and congratulations continue post the World Cup cricket T20 win. Cricketers have got a tremendous homecoming, honoured for their heroics at different airports in India as they landed post Ahmedabad. Fans are delirious with delight, and the money tap has been opened as prize money flows like a river in spate.

There has been debate and discussion about the rewards and healthy debate is always welcome. Earlier, south Mumbai residents had expressed some apprehension about a victory parade, though that did not mean our cricketers and the win should not be acknowledged.

While revelling in this win, we think the best way to honour the victory and its architects is to ensure our children have open spaces to play. This is especially important in Mumbai. Looking at the future, more wins, sporting glory will only happen when GenNext has that most fundamental of all sporting requirements, a place to play.

Keep our space free, not just for cricketers but for every aspiring champion finding their feet in the game that they love and want to play. When they are able to place those feet on the first rung itself, then that is how they will scale that ladder.

India’s cricket captain has reminded people that the Los Angeles Olympics are in 2028, and the team will aim for a gold medal as cricket has been included in the Games. Olympic champions are made on our maidans. Stamp out encroachment, ensure no brick ‘n’ mortar development on grounds and maintain existing parks/gardens. That’s a fitting way to mark this win.
