With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls over, there is not much time to lose in a frenetic city. Leaders in the civic body must now address a couple of key issues, although other problems also require solutions.

Look at manhole and gutter covers. In many places, there are literally cavities on the roads and pavements. See if these can be filled up so that people do not break their limbs walking on these. This is the most basic infrastructure that needs attention immediately.
Lights are another area that one needs to look at. While Mumbai has a reputation for good street lighting, identify spots or areas that are dim or dark, as these can be dangerous, especially for women. Get cracking on filling this lacuna and brightening, literally, people’s lives with good lighting in subways, on skywalks, in certain corners, and at parks that may stay open late but have little to no light.
Look at existing parks that need work or repairs. Clear defunct infra. Repaint faded signage. Commission and carry out repairs so that children are not endangered while playing. Broken benches can be fixed.
Look at the toilets that several of these gardens have inside and see if they are clean and usable. If not, make them so. Clear any kind of encroachment and make gardens a place of pride for the Mumbaikar. Instead of gloating about wins and strutting around victorious, you have your work cut out for you now.
