Reports stated that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered a riveting address at an event in the city recently. Here, the FM told people to confront the growing threats of AI-driven deception while harnessing technology for a trusted financial future.

She was speaking to a large audience of finance and technology leaders. She pointed to the double-edged sword that is technological advancement.

In fact, she said she had seen several deep fakes of her being circulated online, manipulated to mislead citizens and distort facts. We need to have a robust defence against this.

While financial institutions will need to do all they can to stop the deep fake onslaught, even outside the financial realm, people will have to be extremely careful about how impersonation and fraud is getting more sophisticated.

The key here is not to trust blindly. If something feels off-kilter or you are somehow suspicious that such and such a person is not saying this, then go with your instinct. Desist from what the celebrity is asking one to do, hand over money to an organisation, etc. and check if possible. It may also help to take a second opinion or another perspective.

First and foremost, one must realise that AI is a different beast altogether. Look out for strange and jerky movements, facial expressions, and even the audio that may not sound right. Red flags must start flying if you feel you are being rushed into parting with some money; the amount is immaterial.

Remember, nobody is spared. If the FM herself has had to caution people, it is anything goes for the fraudsters, especially famous names and faces, as people tend to be easily lured when it is celebrities who are urging you to part with your money on some pretext or the other. Stay alert, adept, aware and ahead of the pack.
