A few days ago, a 15-year-old boy died after coming under a heavy pitch roller during a cricket coaching camp at Barshi in Solapur district. Reports stated that a couple of coaches had told the youngsters to prepare the playing surface, and the roller was used to flatten the ground. As the boys used the roller, one of them slipped and fell with the heavy roller going over him. He died in this incident.
While police have registered a case of culpable homicide against the coaches and booked organisers for alleged negligence, the focus here is the humongous tragedy, even sadder because it was entirely preventable and the fact that there must be expert supervision when preparing grounds/rooms/courts for any sporting activity.
